Elementary Schools Voting Instructions
Elementary classrooms or schools may conduct elections in their classroom or school with paper ballots. Elementary students will not be able to vote online.
Teachers, to participate in the 2007 Kids Voting election, follow these steps prior to Election Day.
1) On this website, access the ‘Curriculum’ button and download the curriculum, which includes the Voter Registration form and the ballot.
2) Prior to the election, share the portions of the curriculum appropriate to the level of your students and photocopy as many copies of the ballot as you need for your classroom or school.
On Election Day, November 6, follow these guidelines:
1) Designate a place in your classroom/school as the voting booth where students can cast their votes in private. Show a copy of the ballot to your students, explain that they should vote for city council only in the ward in which they live. They should vote for four school board candidates. Note: to help students identify what ward they live in visit the Ramsey County Elections Website at: www.ramsey.mn.us/elections/precinctfinder/index.asp
2) Each student is then given a ballot and allowed to vote in the voting booth. Students should place their completed ballot in the ballot box. (The ballot box can be any size box you have that can be covered to insure secrecy)
3) When all students have voted, the ballots should be counted. To count the ballots, record the votes for each candidate and share the results with the class or school. In 2007 elementary totals are not being tallied. The city council candidate in each ward with the most votes wins your election. The four school board candidates with the most votes are the winners of your school board election.
