Home Schools Voting Instructions

Home schooled students can vote using paper ballots and report their results to Election Headquarters of Kids Voting St. Paul.

To participate in the 2005 Kids Voting election, follow these steps prior to Election Day.

3) On this website, access the ‘Curriculum’ button and download the curriculum, which includes the Voter Registration form, the ballot, and the Election Report form.

4) Parents, prior to the election share the portions of the curriculum appropriate to the level of your students and photocopy as many copies of the ballot as you need for your students.

On Election Day, November 8, voting should take place between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

5) Designate a place as the voting booth where students can cast their votes in private.  Show a copy of the ballot to your students, explain that they should vote for one mayoral candidate and three school board candidates.

6) Each student is then given a ballot and allowed to vote in the voting booth. Students should place their completed ballot in the ballot box. (The ballot box can be any size box you have that can be covered to insure secrecy)

7) When all students have voted, the ballots should be counted.  To count the ballots, record the votes for each candidate on the Election Report Form.  Parents may tally the ballots or upper grade students can do so. When all votes have been added to the Election Report Form, add up the totals.  The mayoral candidate with the most votes wins your election.  The three school board candidates with the most votes are the winners of your school board election.

8) To report your votes to Election Headquarters, go to http://vote.spps.org/count.html. Follow the online directions to enter the totals from the Election Report Form.  Please note: This website will accept your information until 5 p.m. Election tabulations entered after that time will not be incorporated into the data reported to the media.  Your totals will be added to the totals reported by other teachers/schools and reported to the broadcast and print media.

All home school students total votes will be reported on the Kids Voting St. Paul website (www.kidsvotingstpaul.com) or at http://vote.spps.org/count.html.
