Kids Voting St. Paul Offers New Election Materials
In 2007, November 6th is Election Day in St. Paul. This year, citizens of St. Paul will vote to elect a new city council and four of seven school board members. These races will appear on the Kids Voting St. Paul ballot.
The national award winning organization Kids Voting St. Paul, along with several partner organizations, is marking the 2007 election season with local candidate debates for students, a specially designed study guide, visits to schools by “spokes eagle” General Election© as well as other activities—all of which build momentum toward a special Kids Voting online for secondary students in our public charter schools and private schools. Elementary teachers will have the opportunity to download materials and conduct a school or classroom election.
To help students learn about the electoral process and many of the races being contested this year, Kids Voting St. Paul is developing a special study guide for the 2007 election. The study guide is filled with information about local races, as well as listing the candidates vying for each office. Teachers will use the study guide to help their students learn about the upcoming election and the candidates. The study guide will also include complete instructions for teachers to have their students participate in the 2007 Kids Voting St. Paul election.
Kids Voting St. Paul introduced a very popular coloring book in 2004 in which “spokes eagle” General Election© explains the voting process in simple language. Ideal for interactive learning, this coloring book will be distributed to K – 3 classrooms throughout the city in 2008.
Each secondary school will receive classroom sets of the study guide. In addition the curriculum/study guide will be posted on the Kids Voting St. Paul website. Go to the Curriculum page and click on 2007 Study Guide or KVUSA Classroom Activities.
Secondary students will have the opportunity to vote in the 2007 election. Middle, junior and senior high school students will vote online utilizing the St. Paul school district’s website: http://vote.spps.org. Results will be posted the next day on the school district’s website: http://vote.spps.org/count.html and on the Kids Voting website: www.kidsvotingstpaul.com.
