The City of Saint Paul, Saint Paul Schools and the Pioneer Press have joined forces to expand the successful Kids Voting Saint Paul program. The program is an effort to enhance citizen involvement in our democracy by preparing current and future generations of Minnesota voters to participate in the election process. In 2004, Kids Voting Saint Paul saw nearly 16,250 children vote in the general election and have their votes counted. 110 public, private, and charter schools were involved. More than 450 volunteers staffed 104 precincts on Election Day.

The program is conducted in Saint Paul schools and culminates in voting places throughout the city. It is directed and funded by a local, volunteer steering committee made up of educators, business leaders and civic officials. Election information becomes part of the school curriculum, pre-election activities are planned, hundreds of volunteers are organized to equip precinct polling places with Kids Voting materials, and an election that essentially duplicates the adult voting experience is conducted.

The benefits that Kids Voting brings to communities are:

Increased adult voter turnout
Increased communication between students and adults
Increased involvement of parents in their children’s schools
A heightened awareness and excitement about elections among youth

This program needs community-wide support in order to succeed. We need to raise $100,000 in operating funds for the next two years as well as support of partner organizations to implement Kids Voting Saint Paul. We have already received support from the Pioneer Press, 3M, and Wells Fargo bank. Please consider working with us to further educate our K-12 students about voting rights and responsibilities and to increase overall voter turnout in Saint Paul.

Companies and community groups that are working to build relationships, demonstrate their commitment to the community and open the doors to schools, public officials and community leaders are encouraged to sponsor Kids Voting. The opportunities to leverage your financial contribution through employee and member involvement, advertising and other avenues are great. The Board of Directors works to give sponsors maximum exposure and credit, funds are well managed, and most important, Kids Voting is meeting its objectives and making a difference in America.
